On June 5, 2021, the National Event on the World Environment Day 2021, hosted by the National Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the Civilization Office of the CPC Central Committee, and the People’s Government of Qinghai Province, was held in Xining City, Qinghai Province. The Chinese theme of  World Environment Day for this year is “living harmony with the nature”. As a showcase window for the environment philosophy of GEM, GEM (Wuhan) Urban Mining Industrial Group Co., Ltd. has won the title of “Top Ten Organizations Opening Environmental Facilities, thus becoming the model opening environmental facilities to the public in China.

Ecology Priority and Green Development

GEM has always recognized the United Nations SDGs, striving to take actions for carbon neutrality and following the new development concept of “Ecology Priority and Green Development”. By Exploiting urban mines and developing new energy materials, GEM is committed to transforming the resource and energy models in China and the world. With our own actions, GEM works on the carbon emission reduction so as to promote carbon emission peak and carbon neutrality.

GEM efforts in environmental protection:

1. In 2002, GEM was the first in the world to put forward the industrial philosophy “Limited resources, unlimited recycling”, and advocate the concept “Exploiting urban mines” to promote development of cycle society.

2. On June 6, 2020, in the capacity of public environmental company in China, GEM released to the world Green Declarations, thus voicing worldwide its green and low-carbon targets and attitude.

3. By establishing the Task Force of Carbon Emission Reduction Strategy Study and Evaluation, GEM is active to respond to the national strategy, evaluate carbon footprint of exploiting urban mines and developing new energy materials, and facilitate GEM’s tech innovations in carbon neutrality.

4. In terms of clean energy, GEM has completely used vapor and natural gas to replace coals. Besides, GEM is making extensive use of photovoltaic power and energy-storage power station designed by itself, so as to increase the ratio of clean energy.

5. Over the past five years, GEM has invested more than 1.7 billion RMB making “green, safety and IT” reforms in all its industrial parks, so as to reduce the emission of various pollutants while increasing production, improve and upgrade the environmental quality of each park.

6. GEM makes greater efforts in afforestation, organizes all sectors of society and its employees to plant trees and protect the green space. Up to date, it has planted nearly 400,000 trees covering about 5,000 Chinese mu of land.

7. GEM builds waste sorting stations in its industrial parks, regularly organizes activities of recycling small waste batteries and appliances. In this way, it builds, among all its employees, the awareness of environmental protection such as waste sorting and resource recycling.

8. On behalf of Chinese enterprises, GEM won the 2018 Davos World Economic Forum Multinational Corporation Award for Circular Economy and the 2020 Paulson Prize for Sustainable Development - Green Innovation, which has become a symbol of China’s environmental enterprises going global.

Open the Factory and Subject to Supervision

GEM is taking actions and continuing its path on green development and environmental protection. It has made fruitful results in building “green, safe, educational, technological, smart and quality” industrial parks and workshops. In this way, GEM workshops have become environmental protection exhibition hall, and its factory has become low-carbon theme park, which attract community residents, primary and secondary school students, environmentalists and other people from all walks of life. GEM has become an popular enterprise.

On the 2021 World Environment Day, with the theme of “Promoting carbon emission peak and carbon neutrality, living harmony with nature”, GEM continued to carry out a number of environmental protection science-popularizing activities open to the public, and organized nearly 20 diverse environmental protection activities in more than ten of its industrial parks, which were attended by more than 1,000.

More than 500 people, including environmentalists and primary and secondary school students, visited the industrial parks and workshops. In this way, GEM popularizes ecological and environmental knowledge, and makes public the environmental information. More than 200 residents living nearby and GEM employees were invited to participate in parent-child activities organized in the GEM industrial parks to narrow the distance between parents and children. Besides, GEM also organizes employees to carry out environmental protection activities such as eco-theme film viewing, environmental protection knowledge competition, recycling of small waste batteries and appliances. In this way, GEM works hard to convey the concept of low-carbon cycle.

GEM firmly follows the path of “Ecology Priority and Green Development”, implements the strategy of “opening factories to the public”, transmits the concept of circular economy and low-carbon life to the society, guides and mobilizes all sectors of society and all employees to actively participate in the practice of ecological and environmental protection, and joins hands to build a harmonious and beautiful home for all in order to promoting carbon emission peak and carbon neutrality, jointly build a community of human life and nature.
