The 13th Conference of Basel Convention, the 8th Conference of Rotterdam Convention and the 8th Conference of Stockholm Convention by United Nation Environment Program were held in Geneva International Conference Center on 24th April to 5th May, 2017. The conference of parties consists of 1862 representatives came from 169 countries, United Nation Environment Program, United Nations Development Program and United Nations Industrial Development Organization and other international organizations and NGOs. GEM as the only invited environmental protection enterprise from China attended the technical exhibition and received high attentions from the organizer and representatives of all countries. During the conference, Song Xiaozhi, Deputy Director of Department of Environmental Protection, International Cooperation Division, Rolph Payet, Executive Secretary General of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Convention, Samura M W Kamara, Foreign Affairs Minister of Sierra Leone, Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, Environment Minister of Rep Ghana, Surasak Karnjanarat, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Division of Thailand, Christopher Gamedze, the Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs of the Kingdom of Swaziland, Ty Sokhu, the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Kampuchea, Klaus Tyrkko, Director of United Nations Industrial Development Organization of Convention of Stockhol, and Officials and representatives from United Nations Environment Program, United Nations Development Program, Swiss Confederation environment Ministry, American Environmental Development Association, Ministry of environment development in South Korea visited the exhibition booth of GEM. They learned the details of GEM’s recycling industry and praised the achievement of GEM. At the same time, they hope GEM can take advantages of its recycling technology to promote waste recycling in developing countries, especially making more contributions on the comprehensive utilization of E-waste area under “The Belt and Road" initiative proposed by the Chinese government. 27th April, the International Convention on Chemicals and Wastes Synergy Regional Demonstration meeting was successfully held. The conference was jointly sponsored by the Basel Convention Regional and Coordinating Center, Chinese delegation and Swiss Confederation Environmental Office. Hundred delegations attended the meeting. The meeting was hosted by the Executive Director of Asia-Pacific center, Prof. Li Jinhui. Jacqueline Alvarez, Secretary Director of Science and Risk Department of the UNEP, Suman Sharma, Project Officer of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Convention, Franz Xaver Perre, Ambassador of Swiss Confederation environmental office, Xia Yingxian, Director of International Cooperation Department of Chinese Environmental Protection Ministry attended the meeting and delivered an opening speech. The Chinese delegation was invited to introduce the progress and experience of the Basel Convention; Representatives of Thailand and Jordan introduced the Convention countries’ experience on chemicals and waste management; the delegation of Asia-Pacific Center introduced the partnerships progress in metal resource recovery and emphasized the important role of GEM. During the conference, GEM and the Asia-Pacific Centre jointly launched the Global Waste Power Battery Recycling Alliance Initiative. The Alliance is committed to promoting the development of the power battery life-cycle value chain and the global waste power battery management system through the gradient utilization of waste batteries, recovery of metallic materials to minimize the environmental impact caused by careless disposal to achieve social and economic development. It aims to promote the development of a reverse recycling system and the implementation of the circular economy for global power batteries. The initiative aroused widespread concern and enthusiastic discussion of more than one hundred delegates. GEM’s chief international consultant Craig Boljkovac and the director of import and export Jiang Miao attended the conference and proposed the alliance initiative.
