On July 31, 2024, the production of 10,000-ton of energy metal cobalt flake was held in GEM Jingmen Park. Nearly 200 leaders and guests from the Analysis of Industrial Economic Operation in the first half of the year in Hubei Province witnessed the event. Chen Jiawei, Mayor of Jingmen City, Sheng Zhangxue, Chief Engineer of the Department of Economy and Information Technology of Hubei Province, Zhou Junjie, Deputy Mayor of Jingmen City, Wang Wei, Deputy Executive Director of Jingmen High-Tech Zone Management Committee and Mayor of Doudao District, and Professor Xu Kaihua, Board Chairman of GEM, jointly launched GEM 10,000-ton key energy metal cobalt flake project into production, which bringing GEM a great strength in high-quality development.

As a key energy metal strategic resource, cobalt is not only a key element of new energy, but also widely used in machinery manufacturing, electronics and electrical appliances, aerospace industry and other industries, known as "the blood in new energy industry", "essence of  industry" and "gear of industry".  Cobalt plays an irreplaceable role in the new energy industry and modern industrial system. However, China's cobalt resource reserves account for only 1.16% of the world, but usage is more than 50% of the world. To solve the problem of China's stunted industrial development, we must win the battle to defend cobalt resources.

As a world-leading circular economy enterprise, GEM takes the lead in mining cobalt resources in urban mining and builds the world's largest recycled cobalt base, with annual recycled cobalt resources exceeding 3.5 times China's original cobalt mining in volume, effectively supporting China's strategic demand for cobalt resources. GEM Cobalt flake is a high-quality brand in the world, and has been successfully registered as an exchange-approved brand in London LME, with a global market share value of more than 30% and a European market share of more than 50%. GEM Cobalt, as battery core materials, powers more than 20% of the world's smart phones and ternary power battery cars.

The 10,000-ton energy metal cobalt flake project, which has been put into production this time, with the help of the latest generation electrolytic process and self-innovated intelligent equipment, can steadily produce cobalt flakes that meet the Co9995 grade standard which means cobalt content is more than 99.95%. It is an innovative upgrade of GEM original cobalt flake project and a profound extension of GEM new energy material industry chain. The project actively practices the environmental protection concepts of green design, clean production, recycling and emission reduction, which greatly improves the market competitiveness of products and positively contributes to the promotion of carbon emission reduction targets.

At the ceremony, Chairman Xu Kaihua delivered a passionate speech. He said that in the past 20 years, GEM started from scratch in Hubei to create a 30 billion industrial scale today, and become the world's leading circular economy enterprise, GEM's achievements are inseparable from the provincial and municipal governments at all levels to support GEM's innovation and entrepreneurship. Today, the Hubei government once again promote GEM towards Chinese modernization with the strength of the province.

Chairman Xu Kaihua stated that, for Chinese modernization, GEM should practice "four commitments" and achieve "one goal". The first commitment is to lead the global industry with super technology innovation. With the innovation formula of "Super Talent + Super Equipment + Super Innovation = Super Technology", GEM has initiated super technology research,  broken into the no man's land of global industry, and become the leader of global urban mining and an important promoter of global new energy industry. The second commitment is to build a global brand with high-quality products. Mayor Chen Jiawei congratulated GEM on the successful production of 10,000 tons of key energy metal cobalt flakes. He pointed out that this production was not only a major deployment for GEM in the new energy and new material industries, but also a major event in China's cobalt resource recycling industry. He said that Jingmen municipal government would make every effort to provide high-quality services, and hoped the Hubei provincial government to support and care for the development of GEM as always, and promote GEM to become a benchmark enterprise in national high-quality development and a world-class environmentally friendly enterprise.

During the event, the leaders and guests from the Analysis of Industrial Economic Operation of the first half of Hubei Province visited the GEM "Urban Mining" Museum, felt the power of "Turning rubbish into resources, transforming waste into wealth", and were warmly welcomed by the Indonesian student representatives of GEM-CMMAI-CSU Joint Engineering Master’s International Training Class in Metallurgical Technology and New Energy Materials, who were doing internships in GEM Jingmen Park. "Jingmen is amazing, we love Hubei! Love Jingmen!" Viola Pongajow, a student representative, spoke about her feelings of studying and living in Jingmen to the leaders and guests. Ellin Victoria, a fifth-generation Chinese-Indonesian student, shared her 100-year dream, in which her grandfather crossed the ocean to Indonesia to earn a living, and now she returned to China for studying.

Hubei Provincial Economic and Information Technology Department, Hubei Provincial Bureau of Statistics, Hubei Provincial Taxation Bureau, Hubei Branch of the People's Bank of China, leaders in charge of industry from the governments of cities, prefectures, directly administered cities, Shennongjia Forestry District and 49 industrial counties (cities, districts) in Hubei Province, and the Development Zone Management Committee attended the event.
